I don't mean to be a traitor:) but I found this below solution from another source, I tested it and it seems to be solid. Not tested it over a VPN connection yet though.
It makes sense that the IP address renewing would cause connection interruptions and therefore cause authentication problems. The first time you restart Outlook after applying the http connection you will be prompted for credentials, but after that, seems fine. When the IP address is renewed Outlook takes about 30 seconds to try to connect, but then connects and everything is ok. However I am not sure how secure connecting through http is. If anyone has any ideas about this, great! - If you have Outlook Anywhere enabled, then you should force all Outlook clients to use HTTP when connecting.
Ensure you have 'On fast networks, connect using HTTP.' AND 'On slow networks, connect using HTTP.' If you don't, anytime you dock, undock, get a new IP address, refresh your IP address, go to sleep, idle, anything that causes your IP stack wants to renegotiate connectivit will cause a password prompt to appear, EVERYTIME. Changing the authentication mechanism can help, but I've found by forcing everyone to use HTTP will mitigate the prompting of credentials. These settings can be found under your Outlook profile, 'More Settings Connection Exchange Proxy Settings.'
We had this problem on Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010. Our main problem turned out to be because user's passwords were expiring while they were logged in, and only Outlook was asking for the new credentials. Make sure there are no legacy credentials showing. We used some Microsoft scripts etc.
To auto set up people's mail profiles too and at one time this also caused a problem - it left some legacy credentials in there for their domain account which seemed to be messing things up. Since removing these for all of the affected users, the problem never came back. I noticed that if a user changes their password while Outlook is open, that or else, lets their password expire, Outlook will keep plaguing you for your username and password. You can try: 1. When the Outlook pw box comes up: erase all the stuff in it and enter in: yourdomain username in the top box and enter your new password in the bottom. Check the box, 'Remember my password.'
Close and re-open Outlook and hit send/receive. Cntrl+alt+del- choose change password - repeat step 1. (most likely the user's pw went expired and they didn't know). Try rebooting pc on the network (with cable attached for laptops) 4. Worst comes to worst, reset your Outlook Profile from the control panel.
This is very rare though. I'm working through this issue right now on our network. I tried as many 'small' changes as I could think of.
I made 2 changes at one time and the issue has been resolved. The problem is I don't know which fixed it, or if both were required. Here's the 2 changes: 1. Create a new mail profile for the user by going to Control PanelMail. Show Profiles button.
Add button, to create new profile. Command Promptipconfig /flushdns After I made those two changes, it seemed to fix the issue. Chances are it was just the first step. I've been able to resolve some authentication issues by flushing the dns cache on the local machine.
So maybe both helped. We have Outlook 2013 and exchange 2010. Users are set up in cache mode and passwords aren't close to expiring. The credentials box pops up randomly on workstations every few days. In earlier searches for this issue, people recommended changing a few settings in the account properties for the mailbox. The option for Download shared folders should be unchecked, and under the connection tab, uncheck connect to microsoft exchange using HTTP. These two settings keep reverting back automatically, and blowing away my setting to automatically send/receive every 3 minutes.
Putting those settings back, deleting the local OST file, deleting and recreating the mail profile have worked. Or it could just be waiting it out. If you wait long enough, and close outlook and re-open it, it'll authenticate with outlook just fine.
A faster way i've found is to flush the DNS. But why does this keep happening? Its really effing annoying. There must be a patch, or update to resolve this.
Microsoft really screwed the pooch on this. I know our network connection isn't dropping.
We have a client/server app that connects over ODBC which requires a constant network connection - if there's an interruption in network connectivity, users are assaulted with a string of error messages until the app keels over and dies. If anyone has found a real, permanent fix, i'd love to hear it. I've had this problem on and off for years.
No popup boxes for months and then 20 popups a day for a week. The fact that it's intermittent means that my settings are correct. Otherwise it wouldn't login SOMETIMES. This MSKB article says it happens because the server gets overloaded at times. My thought is to write a Add-in/VBA script in Outlook that clicks OK each time the popup box appears.
The script would have to somehow identify that specific popup box, so it doesn't automatically click OK for every popup box. Does anyone know how to write that script? I've written many Excel macros, but never written an Outlook add-in/script.
